“This morning, we’re going to be studying the words of a man who knew that truth better than ANYONE. A man who found a cause even WORTHIER of his life (and death!) than preventing a hostile enemy from getting a nuclear weapon.
That man is the apostle Paul, and that cause is the advancement of the gospel. We were introduced to BOTH the man and the cause last week in our series introduction to this book of Philippians, but in case you missed it, let me quickly catch you up:

Paul, who USED to be known as SAUL, had originally (and ironically!) devoted his life to the cause of persecuting Christians, with the goal of STOPPING the advancement of the gospel. The gospel is the good news about Jesus Christ: that God sent his Son Jesus into the world to live the life of obedience that you and I should be living but all-too-often FAIL to, then Jesus willingly DIED the death that you and I rightfully DESERVE because of our sin – Christ laid down his life sacrificially on the cross, in our place, to pay the punishment for our sins and offer us FORGIVENESS, and then Jesus ROSE from the grave on the third day, DEFEATING Sin and Death and offering NEWNESS of life – ETERNAL life – to ALL who would simply trust in Him by FAITH.
Friends: that is GOOD news; it is THE good news; the BEST news there IS! And it is SO good that the very LAST thing Jesus instructed his followers to do, right before He ascended BACK into heaven, was to TAKE this news to OTHERS, to EVERYONE!”

“Friends, that’s exactly what King DAVID wants to teach US to do this morning, in Psalm 40, when it comes to our SALVATION. If you have been SAVED – if you have come to realize your sinfulness before God and thus your need for forgiveness, if you’ve heard and believed the good news of Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death and his life-securing resurrection for you, and if you have turned from your sins to trust and follow Jesus as your Lord and Savior, then according to the Bible, God’s word, you have been SAVED. Your salvation is an objective, spiritual reality (the most important fact ABOUT you!) that now defines who you are (you’ve been “born again”; you are “a child of GOD”!) and that reality cannot be undone (you can’t be UN-”born again”) – and praise God FOR it!”

“Picture two men walking into a room. The first walks in and everyone begins serving him. Chairs are pulled out. Coffee is poured. Conversations pause so he can speak. The second walks in and immediately starts looking for who needs help: who is carrying too much, who has been ignored, who needs a seat. Which one does our culture call great? Almost without hesitation, we point to the first man. We have been trained to measure greatness by influence, wealth, authority, or the number of people who answer to us when we call.

That is exactly the argument the disciples were having in Mark 10. James and John had just asked Jesus for the two best seats in His coming kingdom, one on His right, one on His left.

Jesus’ response? “42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave[b] of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:42-25)”
