“We never get specifics of what David’s sin here is but there is one thing we do know
and that is that David feels the full weight of it. David opens Psalm 38 with the request:
“O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath” (v. 1).
David is not denying his guilt. He is not arguing that he does not deserve correction. He
is not attempting to justify his actions or shift the blame to someone else. David knows
discipline is coming because he knows he has sinned. His prayer is simply that God’s
discipline would come from the hand of a loving Father rather than the wrath of a
righteous Judge. Even in his deepest misery, David knows there is a difference between
God’s fatherly discipline and His judicial condemnation”
